19 days

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is a 19-day adventure that follows the same trails used by early pioneers in the 1950s. It starts with a scenic 7-hour bus ride from Kathmandu to Jiri, offering an authentic Himalayan experience and breathtaking views.

19-Day Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking

Boundless Adventure offers fixed departure and group join-based trekking for 2024 and 2025 from Kathmandu, Nepal. We’ll take you on a trekking or hiking tour from Kathmandu to Bhandara by Jeep or bus, and from Bhandara to Kalapathar and Gokyo.

Starting from Jiri, this adventure trail provides an easy bus or Jeep drive from Kathmandu to Bhandara. Unlike any other journey to the base of Mount Everest, the Everest Base Camp Trek begins in Jiri. It traverses traditional Nepalese rural hamlets in the Dolakha region until it reaches the crossroads at Lukla. Jiri, Dolakha, and Sagarmatha Base are all initiated from Jiri, a town nestled amidst eastern Nepal’s dense forests and lower high pastureland.

Jiri was an agricultural and livestock farming hub in the eastern Nepalese space and was used by trekkers before Lukla airport began operations. Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climbers of Everest, made it famous in 1953 AD through the same trail. Jiri served as the gateway to Everest for a long time before trekking in the Everest region. During that period, there was no airport or flight service at Lukla.

The Jiri to Everest Trekking route stands apart from other trekking alternatives in Nepal. It starts on a lower hill surrounded by dense tropical forests. While the upper stretch of the trek above Lukla remains consistent with the 14-day Everest Trek, the journey until Lukla distinguishes this trek. However, the trekking trail converges between Lukla and Phakding, leading you onward to Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar via Namche Bazaar.

  • The Jiri to Everest Trek offers breathtaking Himalayan scenery and takes you through local villages inhabited by various ethnic groups, including Tamang, Jerel, Rai, and Sherpas.
  • As you journey towards Sagarmatha National Park, you’ll encounter a natural habitat for rare flora and fauna. This park is home to mysterious animals like snow leopards and red pandas.
  • Kalapathar stands out as an excellent viewpoint in the Everest region. From there, you can marvel at incredible mountain ranges, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Cho Oyu, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Ama Dablam.
  • The popularity of Everest Base Camp soared after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary successfully summited Mt. Everest on May 29, 1953.
